Q&A
Travel to Mexico
What airport should I fly into?
We recommend flying into QRO or BJX. Please visit the transportation tab to get more details.
How do I get from the airport to San Miguel de Allende?
In the transportation tab, we've included a list of private transportation options. Uber is also widely available and safe to use for transport from QRO and BJX to San Miguel de Allende. Selecting the "Comfort Uber" option will ensure you have a nice vehicle with AC. We would recommend against renting a car, as parking is limited and everything will be within walking distance in SMA.
Will I need a visa and / or a passport?
All visitors will need a valid passport to enter Mexico that does not expire within 6 months after your travel, so be sure to renew your passport ASAP! If entering as US or Canadian citizens, you will not need a visa. If you will be traveling under a different passport, be sure to check with your embassy on any other entry requirements.
Logistics in Mexico
Will my phone work in Mexico?
Many plans as a part of AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, Rogers, Telcel, and Bell have Mexico talk, text and data roaming allowances as part of your plan. Please be sure to check with your carrier before you travel to find out what your plan covers.
Can we mostly use credit cards or cash?
Most establishments will accept all major credit cards, especially restaurants and bars. Be sure when paying with a credit card to pay in pesos and not dollars.
However, some smaller markets or shops may only accept pesos. To take out pesos, we would recommend using an ATM in San Miguel for the best exchange rate (i.e., Scotiabank, Citibanamex, Santander, BBVA, Banorte, HSBC), but exchanging dollars for pesos or using an ATM at the airport is also an option. Check with your bank before you travel, as some banks have agreements with Mexican banks for low-to-no fees for cash withdrawals (i.e., Bank of America & Scotiabank, Citibank & Citibanamex). Be sure when withdrawing cash from the ATM to opt for your bank to calculate the conversion rate v. the ATM itself. Be aware that the Mexican peso symbol is the same as USD ($).
Should I drink the water?
The standard across Mexico for visitors and locals alike is not to drink tap water. Hotels and airbnbs will offer bottled or filtered water for your use for drinking. We also recommend to use this filtered water for brushing your teeth. When it comes to ice, all ice is typically made from filtered water, but if you are concerned, waiters and waitresses should be able to answer any of your questions in bars and restaurants.
Be sure to drink lots of water as we are at 6,000 feet elevation!
Do I need a converter or adapter for the outlets?
If you are traveling from the US, you will not need a converter or adapter as the outlets and voltage are the same in Mexico as in the US.
What is the tipping culture in Mexico?
For restaurants or bars, a minimum of 10% is expected or 15%+ for excellent service. For hotel porters, 20-40 pesos or USD 1-2 per bag is recommended. For taxi drivers, round up to a convenient amount. For tour guides, expect to tip at least 10% of the tour cost or 15%+ for an excellent tour.
Is San Miguel de Allende safe?
San Miguel is an incredibly safe part of Mexico, even when walking around at night. A large number of American and Canadian expats live in SMA, and the city thrives on tourism as its primary industry -- making it a very safe place to visit. Of course, it makes sense to use precautions when traveling to San Miguel de Allende, as you would anywhere. Don’t flash expensive jewelry or cash, take only marked taxis or Ubers, and keep an eye on your purse.
Wedding day logistics
How do I get to the wedding venue?
The wonderful aspect of San Miguel is that everything is within a 5-15 minute walking distance! All events will be walkable from your hotel or Airbnb, so no transportation will be needed.
We would advise against renting a car, as parking in San Miguel can be a bit of a nightmare. Ubers are readily available to be able to get from point A to point B, if you should need them.
The streets of San Miguel are cobblestone, so be sure to pack the proper shoes.
What is the dress code for your wedding?
We'd love to see our friends and family all dressed up with us, aka, formal attire.
Ladies should plan to wear floor-length, tea-length, or midi dresses.
Gentlemen should wear a suit and tie.
Can I bring a date?
Our wedding will be an intimate setting to enjoy with our loved ones, so we are not extending additional +1's at this time.
If your partner is invited, their name is included on your invitation.
Is this an adults-only event?
We love your little ones, but due to space constraints, we cannot accommodate guests under the age of 18 at this time. If you do choose to travel with your children, we are working with our wedding planner to identify potential babysitting options.

All events will take place outdoors. San Miguel de Allende has an average high temperature of 75-80°F / 25°C and low temperature of 50-55°F / 10°C. The town's climate is desert-like with warm, dry days and cooler nights.
